Foodventures in Manila, day 3

January 26, 2007

When I'm in Manila, it is very rare that I do not visit Divisoria. It's my mecca there. The sight of many people and with many items for sale in front of me (at low low prices) ignites my brain and quickens my blood. For our day in Divisoria, B suggested that we eat in one of Binondo's oldest Chinese restaurant.

We went down in Escolta and walked past the shops there. We walked past this shop that smelt of heavenly tsokolate. We would have stopped there but it was not what we came for. We walked past the city plaza and made a few turns and arrived at Ilang Ilang Street. It looked like a deserted street. On my left and right are old houses/bodegas which look like they have not been opened for years. B and I were unsure if we were in the right place until we saw the sign that says Ilang Ilang Restaurant. We went inside and a few locals were eating late lunch. (I've learned that one way of telling if a restaurant is good if a lot of the locals eat there) B and I sat in a corner and ordered lomi, fish fillet with tokwa and cooked in tausi (black beans). We also ordered fried rice and kikiam. The lomi was divine. It was full of halo there was almost no sabaw. It was a meal in itself. The same can be said of the fried rice. There were bits of chinese longganisa in it and egg and other whatnots. THe kikiam was large and it had lots of carrots in it. I detected chinese longganisa in it. The sauce was absolutely perfect. Not too sweet and not too salty. The fish fillet was also very good. I liked the tokwa in it best. B ate all the fish and I ate all the tokwa. The server said that our servings ar egood for two people. They must have been referring to two people who have not eaten for two days. The servings were generous and B and I had a hard time finishing it all up. from time to time, we had to ask for hot tea to make room in our stomachs for more (little pigs). Best of all was the price. For our meal, we paid less than Ph400 and the meal was more satisfactory than Manggan's.
