This is Where Your Taxes Go

February 6, 2007

Local police have finally pressed charges against the alleged assassin of a human rights lawyer and his driver who were killed last December. The man was identified thru a cartographic sketch by a man who was a rebel-returnee.  Apparently, the identifier took one look at the cartographic sketch and said that the man looks like a fellow rebel returnee. Based on this, the police have filed charges against the attacker.

The sketch which wat showed a man wearing a cap, his features hidden. The cap was more prominent than the face of the man. This is police intelligence at work.

Foodventures in Manila, still day 5

February 4, 2007

After having lunch at Mr. Kebab, B and I were debating what to have for dinner. I wanted to go to Amici di Don Bosco but we didn't know where exactly it is. B wanted Indian food, specifically, at "Prince of Jaipur". So after dropping by an Internet cafe to check where the outlets of Prince are, B and I went merrily (and with full stomachs) at Eastwood in Libis. oh and so we could work off luch, we went shopping first :) . After we decided that we could decently and with a clear conscience, eat diiner, we went to Eastwood.

At first, we had a hard time looking for price of jaipur as eastwood is literally a sea of eating establishments. B heard some music and said that "we must be near now because I could hear Indian music" while I heard Michael Buble singing. I cracked up at that. anyway, we asked for directions and we went inside this darkly lit place crammed with lots of decor. We were the only ones there. When we were handed the menu, I could see why. The prices are atrocious. Plain rice is priced at Php 100 while shrimp rice is around Php 700. We had an appetizer of mushrooms, lamb tandoori and i forgot what it is called, but its shrimp wrapped in ground chicken. sort of like camaron rebosado. the rice was awesome, fragrant and delicious. the food was great. i loved my roti channai. we had a hard time finishing it off, what with the heavy lunch and all. We paid around Php 2300 for the whole lunch. we just consoled ourselves that it was good value for great food.

Foodventures in Manila, day 5

I was craving for pita bread so I invited foodie B to have lunch with me at Mr. Kebab. Mr. Kebab is a homey place, small and unpretentious. It serves good food at low prices. B had a shawarma and a biryani while I had chelo kebab with my pita. The owner was there, helping out with the busy lunch crowd. (Grabe, super gwapo the guy in front of me. He looked like this guy who used to be my classmate in beda and who was the former boyfirend of hazel decena, now nationally known as prosecutor valdez. only the guy i saw in mr kebab was way cuter. he looked like he was in his early 20s.) back to mr kebab, it's always nice to see an owner who is active in managing his business. makes me want to open up my own. maybe a lugawan? hmm
the food in mr. kebab is always good. not great, but good. in fact, i think the persian place in recto, beside ue tastes better. but i heart mr. kebab's watermelon shake.

Killing Off the Lawyers

February 3, 2007

N told me yesterday that rumors are going around that a total of five lawyer and two judges are to be killed. Gil and Dennis are already dead, so three more are scheduled, if this is true. I guess we’ll just have to wait for another to die before we would know if the rumors are true. I think I know one or two lawyer who are possible targets. But who are the judges?

In Cold Blood

Another lawyer, Atty. Dennis Valencia was gunned down here Friday last week. He was at the Hall of Justice, attending to an inquest. When he came out of the side gate, two men in a motorcycle were waiting for him. One shot him twice in the body then they left. Two men again on a motorcycle arrived and they shot him in the head while he was lying on the pavement. They sped off.
