The Economics of Incest Rape

April 28, 2008

Cath’s story of a father who raped his daughter for two decades reminded me of the similar stories I have heard through the years. A father raping his daughter is not uncommon. It usually happens when the daughter is in her tweens or teens. It does not matter if the family lives in a one room house or not. Or whether the mother is an absentee or a stay at home mom or not. A perpetrator will always find ways to do the deed. And a mother who turns a blind eye to what her husband is doing to their daughter is not uncommon either.

Pinoys on Britain’s Got Talent

April 23, 2008

First there was Madonna Decena. She’s the single mom of two kids who left them in her parents’ care so she could go to the UK and work there as a club singer. She touched the hearts of the audience and the female judge by singing Whitney Houston’s "I Will Always Love You".

Then another one, said to be a half Pinoy, a kid for goodness sake– is on the same show. He sang Frank Sinatra’s "Summer Wind". A 10 year old kid singing that song? Unbelievable.

The kid’s got charm and he’s cute. I don’t know if he will win or that if he does, whether people will buy his albums. If he wins the contest, he only has a few years to enjoy before his voice changes. Madonna– while I do not deny that she has talent–singers like her are a dime a dozen here. Anyway, good luck to both of them. If they don’t get to win the contest, at least I hope that they get some recognition from this.

Simon is actually snapping his fingers to the music. I have to say that the Britons seem to be a great and appreciative audience.

Cholesterol

"You are what you eat", that’s how the saying goes. If a cow eats grass, then the cow is grass. If the pig eats veggies, it is veggies. If a chiken eats grains, the chicken is grains. If the alimango eats tiny fish/seafood, then it is that. So if I eat a juicy steak, I am eating grass. If I eat adobo, I am eating veggies. I am eating grains when I have crispy, juicy fried chicken. And I am eating fish when I am eating aligue. E wala namang cholesterol ang mga yun e. So, eating beef, pork, chicken, and crab is actually  healthy.

Crummy Summer

April 21, 2008

I don’t know if I should be thankful or not. This summer is so confusing because sometimes the sun would shine brightly and sometimes it would rain hard, especially in the evenings. The good thing is, the weather is cool that you don’t even have to use an aircon or electric fan at night or that it doesn’t make one sweaty. What I don’t like is that how can I plan to have an outing at the beach when it is raining?

Ate’s Patatim, The Recipe

A lot of people have been disappointed with my earlier patatim entry, probably because there was no recipe. Since I hate to disappoint, I am posting a version of my Ate’s patatim. I am changing one ingredient and substitute pineapple juice for it. I made a promise afterall not to reveal the recipe and a promise is a promise.

Warning: This is a bit complicated and requires long preparation. When making this dish, I do not make any measurements. I rely on tantyahan. The amount of the flavoring depends really on the size of the pata to be used. There should be enough liquid to inject to the meat and to serve as sauce. Also, the taste that I try to reach here is a balance of flavors. It should taste like achara. Not too sour, not too sweet, not too salty. Just right. So add the ingredients slowly and taste the flavoring before adding more.

Kid in Megamall

April 10, 2008

B and I were hanging out in megamall when we saw this chubby  kid. He was eating hotdog on a stick and he had a hearty appetite. He looks so cute I wanted to pinch his cheeks right then and there. And of course the presence of his mom made me behave myself.

Sinigang na Ulo ng Salmon

April 9, 2008

One of my favorite comfort foods is sinigang, be it pork, fish or shrimp. One time, BFF and I were exploring the newly opened Trinoma Food Court when I was hit by a sudden craving for sinigang. Looking around, I saw Sizzling Seafoods. They make great sinigang na ulo-ulo. I first discovered them in their outlet at the Robinson’s Galleria. The soup is hearty, sour enough to make your toes curl, but not too sour. The veggies are done just right. The salmon head is fleshy, enough for two hungry people. The price is not bad at all.

Tomatoes and Something Else

April 8, 2008

I was doing the marketing last Saturday when I chanced upon these excellent looking  tomatoes. They were fresh and looked so good I could hardly resist.

Walking further on, I found these very fresh fish, so fresh that the "saliva" is still in the gills. I don’t know what kind it is but these are small, no bigger than the palm of my hand.

Looking at the above pic, the fish seem to be staring at me, trying to make me feel guilty for cooking them. Asa pa kayo hehehe. Tsalap.

Bacon Beach

April 7, 2008

Summer ain’t summer  if I don’t go here. The sand is nowhere like the sugary sand of Boracay. But this 15 minutes away and is not crowded.

Sinaing na Isda

April 6, 2008

My sister bugged me to cook sinaing na tulingan a few days ago. I was hesitant because I haven’t seen any kamias/iba in the market lately. But while I was doing the marketing yesterday, I saw a really fresh, big yellow fin tuna and I thought it would make a fine sinaing na isda. I looked for a souring agent and I found some sampaloc. I decided to do some experimenting since I have only used iba the few times I cooked sinaing na isda. Since the sampaloc is not watery, I decided to add some water. Otherwise, when uisng kamias, I do not bother adding water, relying instead on the juices of the kamias. It turned out great and the smell while cooking it, was heavenly.

Lenten Lunch

April 5, 2008

May kasabihan: When the cat is away, the mice will play.

Ramielle Bows Out

April 4, 2008

The weeks of singing bad songs finally took its toll. Ramielle Malubay was voted in the bottom three if Anerican Idol 7 and sang her final AI song this week. Her song last week was sort of okay, better than her last performances, but just didn’t wow people enough. Still, it wasn’t enough to save her from being voted out. Still, all in all, it was a good run.

Disappointed

April 2, 2008

Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands organs dimensions senses affections passions? Fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer as a Christian is?  — Shylock, Merchant of Venice

I try to treat people with fairness and equality.

What I have in abundance, I try to share with others.

Is it too much to expect the same treatment in return from others, especially from so-called friends?

I do not ask that I be given first priority, to be treated as a VIP. What I ask is very simple, that I be treated equally and be accorded the same treatment as others of my kind receive.
