Everyday There’s A Motor-cade
August 16, 2008The thing that fascinated me the first in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City is not the familiarity of strange surroundings or the uniqueness of the things I saw around me. No, it wasn’t those things. It was the scooter.
Coming from a country where the king of the road is a jeepney- or a tricycle, seeing so many scooters in one place is so disconcerting, it’s almost funny. Everywhere I look, there’s a sea of motorcycles and scooters. Cars are so few and are often loaded with foreigners like us who are out on a guided tour. Taxis are even fewer with nary a passengers it’s almost pathetic. Young and old, the motorcycle is the vehicle of chioice.
They even carry heavy loads on their motos. One guy I saw had several large blocks of ice loaded just behind him on his moto!.
