A Dose of the Philippines in Saveur Magazine

While scanning my copy of this month’s Saveur magazine, I chanced upon a seemingly familiar item: Datu Puti Coconut Vinegar. It seems that Saveur magazine is doing its 100 favorites and at No. 97 is this humble vinegar from the Philippines.

Here’s what Saveur has to say:

With its bright tanginess, coconut vinegar adds zest to ceviches and other marinated seafood dishes. Our favorite, DATU PUTI COCONUT VINEGAR, from the Philippines, also works well in vinaigrettes

Why Bringing Back the Death Penalty Is Not the Solution

After the “Alabang Boys” mess, calls are in for heavier penalties for drug pushing. Some legislators are pushing to bring back the death penalty for drug cases. They say that heavier penalties and strict implementation of the law will discourage drug syndicates. This is a bunch of crap, in my opinion

See, criminals do not check what the law says before committing a crime. They don’t go around thinking: “What is the penalty for rape ’cause if it’s too high, I won’t commit it” or “Oh shoot, they now punish drug pushing with death penalty. I better stop my little racket”. Heck no. The average criminal does not think of the penalty because he does not even contemplate the possibility that he will get caught. He thinks that he can get away with the crime. Even if he thinks that far, he will always reason out to himself that he can get away with it.

Thus, a man rapes a woman or a child and threatens to kill her should she tell anyone of what happened. By threatening her, he thinks that he is safe– she is too scared to tell. Or in drug pushing, the pusher thinks that so long as he is careful with whom he is dealing with, he is safe. Or that his protector will protect him.

What is so scary is that most of the time, the criminal is correct.
