Plastic

February 27, 2009

So the popular plastic surgeon to the stars, Dra. Belo, is now embroiled in another controversy where she jokingly dissed former close friend Boy Abunda. She’s qouted as saying in GMA 7’s Showbiz Central “If you want to look like Boy Abunda, go to Calayan. But if you want to look like Dingdong and Piolo, go to Belo”" referring to Belo’s rival, the Calayan plastic surgeons. Boy Abunda of course immediately took offense on the assault on his honor. See, Boy is the image model of the Calayan company while both Dingdong and Piolo are Belo endorsers. Boy was interviewed by best frient Kris Aquino where he wept and questioned why Belo would hurt him that way when he did not do anything to diss her.

The Calayans, taking advantage of free publicity and to show support to their endorser, went on record to say to the effect that what is important is inner beauty. What the heck is a cosmetic center doing, saying inner beauty is more important than physical beauty? Hell, if inner beauty is more important, either they are in the wrong business or they seriously suck at making their clients/patients beautiful.

And why is Boy’s mother watching Showbiz Central and not Boy’s show, The Buzz?

Reading Green

February 22, 2009

Ever since I’ve read in Eating Asia that Saveur magazine has featured Philippine food in its pages, I’ve been hankering to get hold of a copy. Getting a subscription is out of the question as it costs too much–around 4K per year. I could try browsing at Book Sale but the chances of getting what I want are pretty slim, considering the local book sale outlet here.  I mean, where do they get off selling years old magazines for P70?

In times like these, where can a penny pinching girl turn to? The internet, of course. The Read Green Initiative (RGI) publishes and distributes digital magazines.  This minimizes  trash and is eco friendly as it is paperless. The subscriptions arrives as soon as it is available eliminating the need to wait and wait and wait for your favorite foreign magazine to arrive.  There are no shipping charges to be paid. There are several popular titles to choose from. Best of all, when signing up, you get a free one year subsription to any title you want.  Guys, they even have Penthouse and the Mexican edition of Playboy ;)

A Roe By Any Other Name…

February 1, 2009

In an ideal situation, it would be nice that pregnant (?) fish caught would be returned to the sea to spawn, thereby increasing the fish population. However, even if I protest the less than ideal situation, the fact still remains that fish will still be sold in the market even if it is pregnant. Having justified my purchase of alimusang fish roe, I present this:

Alimusang is a close relative of the catfish. Eating the cooked roe is like eating egg yolks. The roe sticks to your teeth and has a gummy feel which I like. What I usually do is to stir fry the roe with garlic, onions, tomatoes, and some grated ginger, adding salt and pepper to taste. Quick and yummy.
